The Diabetes Resource Center at McLaren-Central Michigan, accredited by the American Association of Diabetes Educators, offers a comprehensive referral-based Diabetes Education Program designed to educate and empower individuals to successfully manage their diabetes. Our skilled team of educators includes a certified diabetes educator, who is also a certified insulin pump trainer, registered nurses, registered dieticians, and a pharmacist.
The Diabetes Resource Center offers:
- Individualized Assessment
- Individual Instruction
- Group Instruction
- Glucometer Training
- Insulin Training
Our team approach includes an initial individualized assessment by a registered nurse. Each participant then attends three small group training sessions over three weeks.
Patients are educated on several topics including:
- Lifestyle changes based on eating, exercise and medications
- Prevention and detection of common complications
- Making sense of blood glucose monitoring and laboratory testing
- Tips for managing cholesterol levels, such as reading nutritional labels and counting carbohydrates
- How to educate family and friends
Physician Referral Necessary - A physician referral is necessary for insurance to cover the cost of services. Be sure to contact your insurance carrier using the toll-free number on the back of your insurance card to verify benefits for Diabetes Self-Management Training.

Diabetes Support Group (no physician referral necessary)
Free monthly support group meetings offer the opportunity to learn more about diabetes and interact with others who also cope with daily diabetes management challenges.
