Michigan State University/Great Lakes Cancer Institute at the Breslin Cancer
Center in Lansing, under the direction of Barbara Conley, MD, has entered its
first patients on Phase I studies.
The first patient enrolled and started treatment the week of December
11th. This study is open to patients with Non Small Cell Lung Cancer
who have received prior treatment with a platinum based chemotherapy. They will
receive a chemotherapy oral agent taken once daily. This drug inhibits cell
signaling associated with cancer.
The second patient was enrolled the week of December 18th. This
study will take all patients with any tumor except for leukemia who have
exhausted all standard treatment for their cancer. This is a tumor vaccine trial
working through the immune system to kill the cancer cells.
Phase I trials require extensive monitoring of patients and the involvement
of oncology physicians, nurses, pharmacists and others. Participation of these
two patients marks the official beginning of the Phase I Clinical Trials Program
of MSU/GLCI. There are very few Phase I cancer programs in the Mid-West, making
MSU/GLCI a regional leader in this area.
